When it comes to natural sweeteners, honey and jaggery are two of the most popular choices in Indian kitchens and around the world. Both of these are frequently substituted with refined sugar as a healthy option, but people tend to ponder: which one is really healthier? Let's deconstruct it in an easy-to-understand manner.
Honey is a sweet, natural liquid produced by bees from flower nectar. Honey has been utilized for thousands of years as a sweetener, as well as for its medicinal uses. Honey includes natural sugars such as fructose and glucose, trace amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Jaggery, or "gur," is produced from sugarcane juice or palm sap. The juice is boiled and formed into a thick, solid mass of blocks. Unlike sugar, jaggery is not processed and it contains minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium. Because of this, it is also referred to as a healthier, more natural sweetener.
Honey has approximately 64 calories per tablespoon. It also contains trace amounts of antioxidants and antibacterial agents. Nevertheless, because it is rich in fructose, excessive consumption tends to raise blood sugar.
Jaggery has approximately 60 calories per tablespoon. It is rich in iron and therefore comes in handy for individuals with low hemoglobin levels. It also contains trace minerals and is a good energy stimulant.
Both honey and jaggery possess their own set of advantages. If you desire something which has immunity-boosting qualities and is beneficial in case of sore throats, honey would be the better choice. If you desire an energy lift and a boost of iron, jaggery would be more appropriate.
But moderation is the word. Both are sugars and, therefore, can lead to weight gain or elevated blood sugar levels when taken in excess. Diabetics must be particularly cautious while incorporating either into their diet.
