The Punjab and Haryana High Court has strongly criticized the Punjab Election Commission for not releasing the schedule for panchayat elections as per a petition filed. The bench of the High Court remarked that under any circumstances, the schedule should have been presented by tomorrow. If, due to any reason, elections cannot be held, then the Commissioner will have to present the election report in court.
The petition in the High Court pertained to the stalled secondary elections of a Punjab panchayat. The High Court had previously directed the conduct of these elections. When the elections couldn’t take place due to certain reasons, the petition against the government was filed in court. The High Court, during the hearing of this petition, displayed a stern stance.
During the court session, it was stated that the Punjab government had assured that all panchayat elections would be conducted shortly. The petitioner’s lawyer highlighted that the situation regarding elections hasn’t been clarified yet. It hasn’t been specified when the elections will take place or what the schedule might entail. Consequently, during this hearing, the High Court ordered the Punjab Election Commissioner to present a detailed account regarding the elections.
