The face-to-face encounter, held in Philadelphia and moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis, touched on critical topics like abortion, immigration, crime, war, and the contested 2020 election.
This first head-to-head debate between Kamala Harris, the Democratic hopeful, and Republican Donald Trump drew an impressive 67.1 million viewers across 17 television networks, according to Nielsen data. This turnout shattered the previous June record by a wide margin. Hosted by ABC News, the debate had people eager to see how Harris would handle Trump, making it a pivotal moment for her presidential campaign. Social media also lit up, with Twitter trending the debate and generating buzz, especially after pop star Taylor Swift publicly supported Harris.
Despite the large audience, the debate between Harris and Trump attracted fewer viewers than earlier debates, such as the first Trump-Biden faceoff in 2020, which drew 73 million viewers. Even further back, the Trump-Clinton debate of 2016 still holds the record with 84 million viewers. On debate night, ABC led with 19 million viewers, followed by NBC with 10 million and Fox News with over 9 million. The event also pulled in 7 million viewers through Disney’s streaming services, making it one of the most-watched debates on any network in the last 16 years.
Polling conducted immediately after the debate showed Kamala Harris receiving a more favorable response from viewers. A CNN survey revealed that 63% of viewers preferred Harris, compared to 37% for Trump. Similarly, a YouGov poll showed Harris leading Trump 43-28 among likely voters. Even pundits from Fox News admitted that Harris had the upper hand during the debate.
Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris added more fuel to the post-debate discussion, but the final impact on undecided voters remains uncertain, as further surveys are still awaited to gauge how much the debate shifted opinions.
