It was September 5, 2019, and something miraculous happened in India that reached across the world. At 74 years old, Erramatti Mangamma became the world's oldest woman to give birth, and she gave birth to healthy twin girls. This miraculous tale of hope, science, and perseverance has earned her a place in medical history.
Mangamma and her husband had attempted to conceive for decades, but all went in vain. For years, the aspiration of having children floated like a mirage. They did not lose hope, though. When she reached her old age, Mangamma went in for advanced reproductive technology to achieve her lifelong desire.
To become pregnant at her age, Mangamma underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is a medical procedure where eggs and sperm are harvested to form embryos outside the body, in a doctor's laboratory.
The embryos produced are then inserted slightly into the uterus of the woman. At her age, this was the only feasible way for her to become pregnant. Her health was closely checked by the doctors during the whole process to ensure both the health of the mother and babies.

Mangamma's experience was a double blessing. When the baby was delivered, Mangamma was 74 years old. Because of her age, the physicians determined that the safest method for her to deliver the babies would be by cesarean section (C-section).
She delivered two twin girls successfully, making the amazing story even more extraordinary. The reality that she gave birth to two children at an age where most women are grandmothers or great-grandmothers amazed medical professionals around the world.
Erramatti Mangamma's feat became an official world record. She outdid the former record holder for the oldest woman to give birth. Her example is a testament to the advancements in fertility medicine, defying the age factor to show that age, as significant as it may be, does not always shut the door to parenthood.
Despite the controversy, Mangamma's devotion and passion resulted in a personal miracle: having her two cute daughters in her arms and being titled the world's oldest mother.
