The recently formed Grappling Sports Association is set to introduce the sport in Punjab, organising training programmes for athletes, coaches, and referees. The initiative aims to popularize grappling through regional championships, with the first tournament scheduled in Jalandhar next month.
Akshay Tiwari, President of the Punjab State Grappling Sports Association, shared the association’s vision at the Chandigarh Press Club. He stated, “Our vision is to foster excellence in grappling sports, promote sportsmanship, and provide a platform for athletes to thrive.” The association plans to elevate the sport’s standards in Punjab through inclusive initiatives, training programs, and championship events.
Tiwari emphasized the comprehensive training programs for athletes, coaches, and referees to enhance skills and maintain high competition standards. The upcoming Open Championship in Punjab will be strategically planned for effective coordination and participant engagement.
The association aims to establish partnerships with educational institutions to promote grappling sports at the grassroots level, fostering talent development. Additionally, outreach programs will raise awareness, encouraging community involvement and creating broader support. Regular communication channels will keep members and enthusiasts informed about event updates.
Shubham Chaudhary, Chairman North India, and Abhishek Sharma, Chief State Advisor Punjab (Honorary), were also present at the media briefing. The Grappling Sports Association envisions creating a strong community dedicated to advancing grappling sports in Punjab and contributing to the overall well-being of its members.
What is grappling?
Grappling is a fighting technique as well as a full-contact combat sport based on throws, trips, sweeps, clinch fighting, ground fighting and submission holds. Grappling often involves takedowns and ground control, and may end when a contestant concedes defeat. Should there be no winner after the match time-limit has lapsed, competition judges will determine the winner based on who exerted more control.
