The Coordination Committee of Government and Municipal Corporation (MC) Employees and Workers (UT) Chandigarh conducted a robust demonstration in solidarity with Bharat Bandh at Sector 43 Bus Stand, Chandigarh, supporting the farmers’ agitation as well.
In an official statement, Rakesh Kumar, the General Secretary of the Coordination Committee, highlighted that the Bharat Bandh was called by central trade unions and farmer organizations nationwide to protest against the Central Government’s perceived anti-worker and anti-farmer policies. The Coordination Committee, in alignment with this cause, also enforced Bharat Bandh in the sector.
As a show of support, the Committee burnt the effigy of the Central Government at the 43 bus stands and urged the government to cease its anti-worker policies, ensuring the rights of contract and outsourced employees in Chandigarh through a secure policy.
They advocated for the implementation of the Bonus Act to provide bonuses to workers, filling vacant positions with old contract and outsourced employees, implementing the old pension system, and more. These demands had been previously submitted to the administration by the Coordination Committee on February 22.
The UT Secretariat is anticipated to be encircled by thousands of workers from different unions in Chandigarh affiliated with the Coordination Committee. Notable figures present at the demonstration included Satinder Singh, Head of the Coordination Committee; Anil Sharma, Head of the Horticulture Union; Kishori Lal, Head of the Electrical Workmen Union; Rahul Vaid, Deputy Head of the Sewerage Employees Union; Rajendra Kumar Sharma, Head of the Public Health Workers Union; and Sukhbir Singh, Head of the GMCH Joint Action Committee. The Principal General Secretary also addressed the gathering.
