Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore on Monday stated that the government has identified various earthquake-prone zones throughout the nation. The vulnerability map of India, compiled by the Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC), an independent organisation working under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), also includes the current danger situation for the entire nation.
Responding to a question from Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma, the minister stated that it is the responsibility of the state governments to develop earthquake protection standards for building construction and to raise public awareness of the significance of these standards.
The government has provided states and UTs with a number of instructions, including the release of model buildings that include a chapter on structural safety against natural disasters like earthquakes.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has developed a number of Indian Standards, including those pertaining to earthquake safety.
