Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently revealed the true purpose behind the company’s famous free meal policy, explaining it goes beyond being just an employee perk. In an interview on “Bloomberg’s The David Rubenstein Show”, Pichai shared how these communal meals foster creativity and collaboration, driving innovation within the company.

Reflecting on his early days at Google, Pichai, who joined the company in 2004 as a product manager, said some of the most brilliant ideas stemmed from casual conversations during meals. “I can recall several times being in cafes, meeting someone, talking, and getting excited about something. So, it sparks creativity,” he said.

Pichai emphasized that the benefits of these communal meals far outweigh the costs, calling them a long-term investment in creativity and community building. Beyond meals, Google offers a wide array of employee-friendly initiatives, including health insurance, flexible work options, and wellness programs, making it a top choice for job seekers. With over 182,000 employees worldwide, the company boasts a high acceptance rate of about 90% for job offers.

While some of Google’s perks were scaled back in 2023, including reducing hours at some office cafes, Pichai noted that the company’s benefits remain among the most generous in Silicon Valley, influencing other companies to adopt similar practices.
