Kangana Ranaut Slams Media for Ignoring Ladakhi ‘Goncha’ in Fashion Coverage

Kangana Ranaut, the actor and BJP leader, criticized media reports for failing to recognize the traditional Ladakhi attire, goncha. She shared her frustration on Instagram, expressing disappointment that the outfit was not properly acknowledged.

Kangana Wears Traditional Goncha

Recently, Kangana wore the goncha, a long woolen robe that reaches the ankles. The attire, made from thick wool, protects against the cold Ladakhi climate. She shared photos of herself in the outfit from her newly opened cafe, The Mountain Story, in Manali. However, she was upset that the media failed to identify it as traditional Ladakhi clothing.

Cultural Oversight

Furthermore, Kangana criticized fashion bloggers for lacking respect and understanding of mountain cultures. She stated, “Absolutely embarrassing that these so-called fashion bloggers have no knowledge, understanding or consideration for mountain people, their culture or traditions; everything is not anarkali.” She pointed out that no article called the dress by its correct name, traditional Ladakhi goncha.

Promoting Local Fashion

In addition, Kangana emphasized that the goncha can be just as beautiful as international gowns. She urged people to recognize and support local traditional attire. “Goncha can look more beautiful than gowns,” she wrote, also adding the hashtag #vocalforlocal to encourage a stronger connection with Indian culture and fashion.

The Beauty of Goncha

Moreover, the goncha is not only functional but also visually striking. It features intricate designs such as stripes and Buddhist motifs, known for its vibrant colors. The goncha reflects the historical connection between Ladakh and Tibet. Typically, women pair it with traditional jewelry made of silver, gold, and precious stones, adding to the beauty and elegance of the outfit.
