The legendary actor, director and environmentalist Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89. He was an indelible part of Hollywood's fabric and a colossal preserver of American cinema the lineage of his celebrated films, visionary direction and tireless advocacy for independent filmmaking as well as environmental preservation.
Charles Robert Redford was born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California. He is Known for his well-chiselled personality augmented with rugged charms which are balanced with quite introspective storytelling, and he has left an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences to his extraordinary legacy as an actor, director, environmentalist and founder of the Sundnace Institute which never ceased transformation of various spheres of entertainment as well as independent cinema.
He started on the Broadway stage in Barefoot in the Park and then moved into films. Robert Redford breakthrough role was in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) then came the blockbusters The Way We Were and The Sting in 1973. In 1958, Redford married Lola Van Wagenen, they had four children one of whom died tragically of sudden infant death syndrome. Amongst the three surviving children are Shauna, James and Amy each drew from creative wells in their work. While Amy went into acting just like her father, James is a screenwriter. After nearly thirty years of marriage Redford and Lola finally divorced in 1985.

The net worth estimates for Redford stand approximately at $200 million. This wealth is the result of many years of successful activities from acting and directing to creating good investments and business interests like Sundance Resort with his Utah property and the Sundance Institute.
After announcing retirement following his acting in The Old Man & the Gun (2018), surprise greeted fans in 2025 when he made a brief cameo in the season 3 premiere of AMC's Dark Winds. At the age of 88, he played alongside George R. R. Martin in a gripping scene two aging minds playing chess behind bars. This has to be the poetic return of a man who has often demanded from viewers to expect the unexpected.
