Vuitton’s success grew quickly, Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, appointed him as her official trunk-maker and his association with the French royal court cemented his reputation.
In 1858, Vuitton launched a new line of rectangular canvas trunks, they were waterproof and durable, catching the attention of travelers worldwide and to fight counterfeiting, he created a distinctive checkerboard pattern—later followed by the iconic LV monogram, introduced by his son Georges Vuitton in 1896.
