The popular Netflix series Emily in Paris has suffered a huge loss. Diego Borella, an assistant director on the show, died during the filming of Season 5 in Venice. He was 47.

The incident happened on Thursday, August 21, while the team was preparing to shoot the final scenes at Hotel Danieli. Around 7 PM local time, Borella collapsed suddenly. Emergency medical staff rushed to help him, but he was declared dead at 7:30 PM.

The Venice health service told The Independent, “Our ambulance arrived at 18.42 (on Thursday evening). Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end, all efforts proved fruitless. At around 19.30, he was pronounced deceased.”

Cause of Death

According to reports in La Repubblica, Borella died of a sudden heart attack. Local doctors confirmed the cause. His untimely death shocked the cast and crew, many of whom had worked with him for years.

The filming of Emily in Paris Season 5 was immediately paused after the tragedy. A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios stated People:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The production team resumed filming on August 23. The shoot is expected to wrap up on August 25.

Who Was Diego Borella?

Borella was a well-known Italian filmmaker. Born in Venice, he worked as a writer and director in Rome, London, and New York.

Colleagues described him as a creative professional with a passion for storytelling. His sudden death has left a void in the Italian film community.

Season 5 Release Date

Despite the tragedy, Emily in Paris will return with its much-awaited Season 5 on December 18. This season brings a new twist as Emily, played by Lily Collins, moves from Paris to Rome.

The official synopsis reads, “Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks.”

Diego Borella’s sudden passing is not just a loss for the Netflix show but also for the Italian film industry. His work and dedication will be remembered by all who collaborated with him.
