It all began in August 2005, when a 17-year-old Rihanna released her debut album, Music of the Sun. What started as a young singer’s first step into the music world would soon turn into a global phenomenon. Over the next two decades, Rihanna evolved into more than just a performer she became an actress, a business powerhouse, and an inspiration to millions around the world.
Two decades later, on August 29, Rihanna celebrated a monumental milestone: 20 years in the music and entertainment industry. To mark the occasion, the Barbadian superstar, born Robyn Fenty, shared a heartfelt note expressing her gratitude to the millions of fans who have been part of her journey from the very beginning.
Reflecting on her career, Rihanna wrote, “20 years ago, I left my country, my culture, my food, and family to embark on a journey that started with the release of my very first body of music! So many of you were a part of my life and career since the very beginning, and some of you have joined the adventure along the way. I’m forever grateful to all of you. Each of you played a very crucial role in where this journey has taken me thus far!"
To complement her message, Rihanna shared a two-and-a-half-minute video highlighting her most iconic moments over the last 20 years. The clip showcased her unforgettable looks, record-breaking achievements such as “Most diamond certified singles by a female artist,” “Two-time Emmy Award winner,” and “nine Grammys,” as well as her award-winning performances, charitable work, magazine covers, and Fenty brand ventures.
The video also highlighted Rihanna’s bold personality, with her remarking that well-behaved people seldom make history. It gave fans a glimpse into her personal life, showing her partner A$AP Rocky and their two sons, RZA and Riot, and also revealed that she is expecting her third child.
Rihanna didn’t limit her gratitude to fans alone—she acknowledged the team and all those who supported her along the way. She wrote:
“I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you! Thank you for the greatest first 20 years ever! 20 years of the most loyal, die-hard fans that don’t play about me whatsoever, 20 years of hard work and hardworking teams around me, 20 years of lessons, 20 years of unforgettable experiences and accomplishments. 20 years of my family being my number one support system, and to all the people who said yes to me and gave me a chance before it was ‘cool’ to (Execs, DJ’s, writers, producers, dancers, choreographers, directors, fashion designers, photographers, glam, journalists, brands, mentors, etc etc) 20 years worth of thanks to you!!"
She concluded by giving thanks to God, writing: “I thank God, He’s been very generous to me, and the Glory belongs to Him! #R20."
