Veeru Devgan’s life is no less dramatic than a Bollywood script. From his early years surrounded by struggle to becoming one of the most respected action directors in the Hindi film industry, his journey is both inspiring and extraordinary. Known as the father of Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn, Veeru left behind a legacy that shaped not just his son’s career but also the action genre in Indian cinema.
Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Veeru Devgan moved to Mumbai to chase his dreams. According to old film circles, his younger days were linked with a gangster-like lifestyle before he turned his life around. Choosing films over the streets, Veeru began working as a stuntman, performing risky sequences that earned him recognition in the industry.
Veeru’s dedication and fearlessness made him one of the most sought-after stunt choreographers in Bollywood. He worked on more than 80 films, designing daring action scenes that redefined cinematic fights in the 1970s and 80s. He later turned into an action director, with his work being praised for its raw energy and realistic feel.
One of his most celebrated works was Phool Aur Kaante (1991), the debut film of his son Ajay Devgn. The iconic stunt of Ajay balancing on two moving bikes became an instant sensation and remains one of Bollywood’s most unforgettable action sequences.
Apart from action choreography, Veeru also tried his hand at direction. He directed Hindustan Ki Kasam (1999) starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn, though the film didn’t fare well commercially. Still, his reputation as a creative technician in action remained untarnished.
Veeru married Veena Devgan, a film producer. Together, they raised their children, with Ajay Devgn rising to become one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars. Today, Ajay has a net worth of over ₹450 crore, carrying forward his father’s legacy while carving his own path as an actor, director, and producer.
Veeru Devgan passed away on 27 May 2019 in Mumbai due to cardiac arrest. His funeral was attended by the biggest names in Bollywood, a mark of the respect he commanded in the industry. Veeru Devgan’s story reflects grit, transformation, and the spirit of Bollywood. From a man with a rough past to a celebrated action director and father of one of India’s most bankable stars, his life journey continues to inspire.
