Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Bengal Files’ Trailer Sparks TMC Backlash, Event Disruption in Kolkata

The Bengal Files trailer has invited backlash from TMC spokesperson Kunal Gosh, who took to his X account to question its director Vivek Agnihotri.

The trailer for the final film in the Files Trilogy, The Bengal Files, by the Indian movie director Vivek Agnihotri, premiered a few hours ago. In the lead-up to the release, Vivek faced a lot of roadblocks with the film’s trailer launch event being interrupted twice, before Agnihortri was escorted out of the place. In addition, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has shared serious pushback for Anghnihotri’s upcoming film, calling him out for promoting the BJP agenda through films.

Kunal Gosh Accuses Vivek Agnihotri of Promoting BJP Agenda

In a video shared on his X account, the TMC spokesperson issued a response to The Bengal Files trailer. In the video, Gosh accuses Agnihorti of promoting the BJP agenda through films. He calls out the The Kashmir Files director for not making films about tragic historic events that happened in BJP-ruled states.

Gosh, questions Agnihotri’s on not making The Gujarat Files, about the Godhra Riots of 2002 and the horrifying story of Bilkis Bano. He continues to name other BJP-ruled states that can warrant a movie about it, he specifically mentions UP, Manipur and MP to make his argument. 

Gosh continued to make several more statements about Agnihotri and his intentions with The Bengal Files. He also suggests that the The Kashmir Files director should not be allowed in the state of Bengal anymore, but has been welcomed with open arms because of the state’s democratic values.

Vivek Agnihorti Faces Roadblocks During Trailer Launch

During the launch event of The Bengal Files Trailer in Kolkata, Vivek Agnihotri faced multiple roadblocks. In a video shared by ANI, Agnihotri can be seen venting his frustration on stage as he informs the attendees that some have cut the wires at the venue. He also claimed that a multiplex chain in the city refused to play the trailer. 

Agnihotri was escorted out of the venue by his security after the event was interrupted by the police.

After the incident, the director took to his X account to raise questions regarding the incident.

“Today West Bengal police, on orders of ‘top authorities’, illegally stopped the trailer of #TheBengalFiles,” the director wrote in his post.

He ended his post by saying, “Democracy is dead in Tagore & Vivekananda’s land.”

About The Bengal Files

The Bengal Files is a movie set in late 1940s Bengal, a period of heightened religious tensions in the region. This movie is Agnihotri’s attempt at telling the story of Hindu genocide during this period, which he claims to be a true story. The movie stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumaar, and Simratt Kaur in key roles.

The Bengal Files is slated to release in theatres on 5th September 2025.
