The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, surprised royal watchers with her boldest hair change to date. On August 24, she stepped out with noticeably lighter blonde locks while joining Prince William and their three children Prince George (12), Princess Charlotte (10), and Prince Louis (7) for a church service at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral in Scotland.
Kate paired her fresh hairstyle with a dark berry coat and a matching hat, creating a striking contrast as the family attended their annual Scottish summer retreat.
The outing wasn’t just a family affair. Other senior royals also attended, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Princess Anne with Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince Edward with Duchess Sophie.
This marked Kate’s second major hair update in recent months. In July, she went for a honey-blonde look, but this time, she embraced an even lighter shade, signaling her most dramatic shift yet.

Interestingly, Kate isn’t the only one in the royal circle experimenting with new styles. Her younger sister, Pippa Middleton, also debuted a transformation at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix last month. She swapped her dark brown, long bob seen during Christmas celebrations for a shorter, blunter cut with lighter brown tones. Pippa, 41, shares three children Arthur (6), Grace (4), and Rose (3) with her husband James Matthews.
Even Princess Anne, known for her consistency, surprised many by changing her hairstyle for the first time in 50 years. Ahead of her 75th birthday, she appeared in a royal portrait on August 8 at Windsor Castle with Sir Tim, wearing an elegant chignon instead of her iconic bouffant.
The change was especially noteworthy because Anne has stuck to her signature bouffant for five decades. She previously explained in the 2020 documentary Princess Royal: Anne at 70 why the style works for her.
“I read an article the other day about Netflix and The Crown, but the actress was talking about how long it took them to do their hair like I did,” Anne recalled, referring to Erin Doherty, who revealed it took hours for stylists to replicate the look. Anne added with a laugh, “And I’m thinking, ‘How could you possibly take that long?’ I mean, it takes me 10 or 15 minutes.”
