Anurag Kashyap returned to the big screen with his latest crime drama Nishaanchi. Released on 19th September, the film was mounted by Kashyap as the movie that would pull big numbers at the box office. Released on the same day as Subhash Kapoor’s Jolly LLB 3, the movie has completed two days in theatres. Let’s have a look at the movie’s box office performance during this time and how things are looking for the movie.
Aurag Kashyap History At The Box Office
Despite being a famed director in the Indian film Industry, Anurag Kashyap has always been a director who has failed to pull big box office numbers. The main reason for this has been his love for the art of filmmaking, which leads him to distance himself from the more formulaic stories that have proved to be big box office pulls. Over the years, the famed director has released enjoyable movies that have garnered the audience’s praise and even the esteemed status of being a classic movie. The list of some of his most popular movies includes Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, Dev.D, and Raman Raghav 2.0, among others.
However, despite all of the aforementioned movies receiving widespread praise from the audience, none of them were box office monsters. The situation worsened with time as Kashyap’s movies continued to perform poorly at the box office.
Anurag Kashyap’s Recent Box Office Figures
In recent years, Kashyap’s box office performance has taken a hit due to the audience’s inclination towards more action-packed movies, which do not fall in line with Kashyap’s vision as a director. As a result, his recent releases, such as Dobaaraa (2022), which starred Taapsee Pannu in the lead role, also tanked at the box office, generating an estimated box office total of Rs. 6 crore on a reported Rs. 30 crore budget. This trend continued with his next theatrical release in 202,3, Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat starring the debutant Karan Mehta and Alaya F as the film’s leading faces.

Recalling Anurag Kashyap’s Claims of Nishaanchi Box Office Performance
In the lead-up to the movie’s release, Kashyap had expressed confidence that this film could perform well and even bring in profits, marking a potential turning point for his box-office records. In a recent interview in the lead up to the movie, Gangs of Wasseypur director told Telly Talk India that “This time, the ending will be such, Javed saab, that I will earn money.” This comment from the director came in response to Javed Akhtar’s comments on Mukkabaaz (2018) ‘s non-commercial ending
Nishaanchi Box Office Performance in First Two Days
According to reports published by Sacnilk, Nishaanchi earned around ₹25 lakh in India on its opening day. On its second day, the film collected about ₹30 lakh, bringing the two-day total to ₹55 lakh (approx.). Although the film showed growth in ticket sales from Friday to Saturday, it has not yet achieved significant momentum.
Why is Nishaanchi Tanking at The Box Office?
Its first two-day performance reflected a lack of interest from the audience, with online reviews also rating the film as an average watch, pointing out its resemblance to Gangs of Wasseypur. This leads to the inevitable question: Why is Nishaanchi Tanking at The Box Office?
The clear answer to this seems to be the film’s clash with the Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi starrer Jolly LLB 3 and its lack of a big face. The film stars the debutant Aaishvary Thackeray, who is not a face popular enough to compete with the cast and name value of Jolly LLB, which collected ₹12.75 crore on its opening day. In short, the lack of a popular face and mediocre reviews from critics make Nishaanchi a non-contender at the box office. However, there is still a chance of the film experiencing growth in its box office performance with word of mouth.
