Homebound released in theatres on September 26.
Homebound Box Office Collection: Homebound, India's official selection for the 2026, released in theatres this Friday. The Neeraj Ghaywan movie is India's entry for the Best International Feature category at the 2026 Oscars. It premiered at the 2025 Cannes festival in May ahead of its release on 26th September. However, in spite of being India's selection for the Oscar 2026, the movie has failed to fill seats in theatres.
The Neeraj Ghaywan movie opened in theatres to underwhelming first-day numbers. According to reports published by Sacnilk, the movie collected ₹30 lakhs on the first day of its release. On day two, the box office numbers fell substantially; however, its day two collection was halted at ₹50 lakh. The Ishan Khatter starrer maintained its second-day numbers on Sunday, minting ₹52 lakhs on its third day at theatres.
In total, the film crawled its way to a first weekend collection of ₹1.32 crore.
From Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG to Paul Anderson's One Battle After Another, this week has seen a lot of highly anticipated releases. With Pawan Kalyan taking the lead at the box office by a long shot, Homebound struggles to make a mark at the box office and hangs with the Paul Anderson movie, which collected an estimated ₹ 1.25 crore in two days. Also in the same bracket is the Chainsaw Man Reze Arc Movie and ShiChanan: The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers in India.
Homebound stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, it is the story of two childhood friends, Mohammed Shoaib Ali (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan Kumar (Janhvi Kapoor), who share the goal of becoming police officers. It follows their journey from kids to adults, exploring the changing dynamics of their friendship as they move closer to their goal.
It is based on a New York Times article A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway by Basharat Peer. Set against the backdrop of COVID-19, the movie tackles the themes of social inequality. It is also Ghaywan's return to feature films after 2015's Masaan.
Although Neeraj Ghayman's movies are not known for being box office successes, as seen with Masaan (2015), which was a commercial flop until it received classic status, there are hopes for Homebound. This is primarily due to its status as India's entry at the Oscars. Made on a reported budget of ₹25 crores, with Martin Scorsese as an executive producer, the movie has hopes of attracting audience attention with its positive word of mouth.
