Coolie box office collection day 1: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s multi-star movie, featuring Rajinikanth in the lead role, hit theaters on 14 August. The Tamil action-thriller is competing against the big-budget Bollywood film War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. Based on initial trends, Coolie seems to take a higher edge over War 2 in opening day collections.
Coolie Beats War 2 in Opening Day Race
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Coolie earned ₹61 crore net in India on day 1, while War 2 managed ₹45 crore. The film, released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, witnessed extraordinary audience turnout in South Indian states.
Coolie had a Tamil occupancy of 84.5%, Telugu occupancy of 91%, and Hindi occupancy of 29% at reporting time. Places such as Pondicherry, Salem, and Warangal reached an astronomical 99% occupancy, with Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hyderabad close behind at 97%.
Rajinikanth’s Career-Best Opening
This ₹61 crore opening is Rajinikanth’s highest opening ever, one better than his ₹60 crore opening for the sci-fi epic 2.0. Still, it was short of establishing a new record for all-time Tamil cinema, still in the possession of Vijay’s Leo, which opened for ₹66 crore.
The release of the movie coincides with a big milestone Rajinikanth completing 50 glorious years in films on 15 August. The fete surrounding his golden jubilee has contributed to the film’s buzz, drawing humongous crowds to cinemas.
Star-Studded Tributes and Grand Cast
While Coolie released in cinemas, tributes came pouring in for Rajinikanth from industry stalwarts like Kamal Haasan, Hrithik Roshan, Sivakarthikeyan, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Nani, among others.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie features a star-studded cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, and Aamir Khan in leading roles. Sun Pictures produces the film, and its music has been written by Anirudh Ravichander, whose peppy score has been winning accolades.
