Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck, has emphasized the vital importance of the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business (APK). Speaking ahead of the event, Habeck noted the rapidly changing global landscape and stressed the need for stronger collaboration between Germany and the Indo-Pacific region.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Habeck highlighted how the Asia-Pacific Conference could not have come at a more critical time, given the global shifts in trade and economic policy. He remarked, “We are living in a world that is changing at tremendous speed, and not always for the better.” The 18th APK, set to begin in New Delhi on Friday, will focus on strengthening ties between Germany and the Indo-Pacific, a region that Habeck identified as key to future economic growth and cooperation.
Habeck expressed optimism about Germany’s future collaborations with the region, noting, “We believe that the Indo-Pacific region and Germany will work very closely together. This conference is a sign of that commitment.”
The Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business, a biennial event, brings together business leaders, executives, and political representatives from Germany and Indo-Pacific nations. This year’s event will see over 800 delegates in attendance, including Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Habeck praised the efforts of Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for supporting the conference, noting that the event reflects the growing importance of India-Germany relations. “This conference is not just a business event but a gathering of tremendous political importance,” Habeck added.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that both Chancellor Scholz and PM Modi will deliver addresses at the conference. The APK is expected to further boost trade and investment ties between Germany and India. Approximately 650 top business leaders and CEOs from across the region are expected to participate, with key discussions on trade agreements, infrastructure development, and emerging sectors such as green technology and pharmaceuticals.
Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG and President of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), also addressed the press conference alongside Habeck. Busch emphasized the strategic importance of the Asia-Pacific region, stating, “By 2050, this region will account for 50% of the global GDP and population. It’s also home to 50% of the world’s CO2 emissions, making it a crucial area for green technology investment.”
Busch further highlighted India’s rapid infrastructure development, citing the electrification of 12,000 kilometers of railway tracks in just five years—half of Germany’s entire electrified rail network.
Both Habeck and Busch expressed optimism about the potential for a free trade agreement between India and the European Union, noting that such an agreement would unlock vast opportunities for both sides. “We’re looking forward to a free trade agreement with India,” Busch said, adding that discussions are ongoing and progressing.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in India for a three-day visit on Thursday. Following the Asia-Pacific Conference, Scholz will hold bilateral talks with PM Modi and attend the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) in New Delhi. After the conference, Scholz will travel to Goa, where two German naval ships are making a port call as part of Germany’s Indo-Pacific deployment.
The MEA has noted that India and Germany are celebrating 50 years of Science and Technology collaboration this year. The visit of Chancellor Scholz is expected to further strengthen the 25-year strategic partnership between the two nations.
