Shocking incident of gang rape involving a first-year student has come to light at a government college in Nabha. The Nabha police under the jurisdiction of Kotwali Nabha Police filed a case, naming one youth as the accused, while two others remain unidentified. However, no arrests have been made yet in the case.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim, on the morning of March 27, she arrived at the college as usual. Around 11:30 AM, the accused, Davinder Singh from Kakrala village, approached her, claiming he had something important to discuss. He insisted that she accompany him to a room on the first floor above the principal’s office.
As soon as the lecture ended around 1 PM, she went to the designated room. However, upon arrival, she found not only Davinder Singh but also two unknown individuals. One of them immediately bolted the door upon seeing her, while the other covered her mouth to prevent her from making any noise. Subsequently, all three accused perpetrated the gang rape.

The main accused, Davinder Singh, is reportedly an outsider, according to Gurpreet Singh Samrao, the Station House Officer (SHO). He acknowledged that the police have identified the other two accused as well and assured that all suspects would be apprehended soon. Samrao stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine how three perpetrators managed to commit such a heinous act in the college premises, where there is continuous movement of students and staff. The police are actively pursuing the arrest of the accused.
It is worth noting that the room where the incident occurred is located above the principal’s office and serves as a science room.

It witnesses constant foot traffic of students during college hours. Additionally, CCTV cameras are installed on the upper floor for continuous monitoring.

This incident adds to the alarming rise in crimes against women in Punjab. Just a few days ago, in Tarntaran, angered relatives of a youth involved in a love marriage tore off the clothes of the youth’s mother and paraded her semi-naked in the streets. The video of the incident went viral. In this case, the police arrested four suspects.

The High Court also took cognizance of the matter, making strong remarks akin to the Mahabharata era, comparing it to the silence of Pandavas and Bhishma Pitamah upon Draupadi’s disrobing, which eventually led to the deaths of millions in the Mahabharata war. The court stated that in today’s era of rule of law, the administration cannot remain silent in the face of such incidents. Taking note, the High Court has ordered the Punjab government to submit a status report by April 30.
