The deadline for applications for the head coach position of the Indian cricket team is approaching in two days. While the names of the applicants remain undisclosed, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir seems to be emerging as the leading contender for the coveted role. Gambhir’s candidacy has been prominent from the outset, being the sole notable Indian figure in consideration. However, with BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarifying that no approach was made to former Australian cricketers like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, Gambhir’s prospects have surged.

Shah also hinted that the successor to Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach post the T20 World Cup would likely be an Indian well-versed in the domestic cricket setup. “It’s crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level,” Shah emphasized.

In contrast to numerous foreign coaches hesitant to engage with the Indian team until 2027 due to their packed schedules, Gambhir appears willing to embrace the challenge. Although there hasn’t been any formal approach from the BCCI to Gambhir yet, the former batsman seems open to the opportunity. “Gambhir may not be averse to taking it up. He is that kind of character who never shies away from a challenge,” a source stated.

However, there’s a potential stumbling block. Even if an agreement is reached between the BCCI and Gambhir, securing the left-hander’s services might pose difficulties. Gambhir serves as the mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, a role facilitated by team owner Shah Rukh Khan. After a successful stint with KKR, where the team reached the IPL 2024 final, Gambhir’s bond with SRK is robust, making his potential departure uncertain.

The KKR management, buoyed by Gambhir’s mentorship, would be reluctant to release him, especially after such a triumphant season. Consequently, any discussions between Gambhir and the BCCI might necessitate input from SRK. “If it comes to that, it will be decided in a private conversation between Shah Rukh Khan and Gambhir,” the source elaborated.
