On Friday, Chhattisgarh Police filed a case after discovering the carcasses of four cows and ten calves in a stray animal enclosure in Marda village, Balodabazar-Bhatapara district.
The police registered an FIR under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Chhattisgarh Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act.
The carcasses were found in an enclosure room in the village. According to Balodabazar-Bhatapara Collector Deepak Soni, a police and district administration team was sent to investigate. Villagers explained that they kept the cattle in a three-room house to prevent them from damaging crops.
The villagers reported that a committee was in charge of the cattle, and they discovered the dead animals after noticing a foul smell. The deaths are believed to have occurred two or three days prior. Four members of the committee have been taken into custody.
Villagers suspect the cattle may have died from suffocation or starvation due to being confined in the room. The police are awaiting a postmortem report for more details on the cause of death.
