In a recent operation, Mumbai Crime Branch’s Unit 6 apprehended four Bangladeshi immigrants over the past two days for allegedly residing illegally in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The individuals, identified as Abushahid Abdul Hamid Alimiya (26), residing in Kamothe at Navi Mumbai, Akram Noornabi Shaikh (37), residing in Wadala, Mumbai, Lina Shajan Haldar (26), and Monali Khatoon Rafik Shaikh, also known as Monji Khatun Sheikh (35), both living in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai, were taken into custody.
Acting on a tip-off received on November 8, the crime branch officials set up a trap in the Jaikarwadi area at Wadala, leading to the arrest of Shaikh, who was found with an Aadhar card during the operation. Subsequent questioning confirmed that Shaikh, originally from Chitagaon state in Bangladesh, entered India illegally several years ago.
Further investigation based on Shaikh’s interrogation revealed the involvement of another alleged illegal immigrant, Haldar, who was arrested from Kopar Khairane on December 8. It was discovered that Akram came to Mumbai with Monali Shaikh’s assistance after crossing the India-Bangladesh border, leading to her arrest for staying without valid documents. The trio appeared in court on Saturday and has been remanded in police custody until December 12.
Later, the police received information about Alimiya, who works as a delivery boy in Navi Mumbai. Alimiya’s parents allegedly entered India illegally and resided in Mumbai. Born in India, Alimiya’s father passed away during his childhood, prompting his mother to return to Bangladesh. After completing studies till class 5 in Bangladesh, both mother and son returned to India illegally. Alimiya, in contact with other alleged illegal Bangladeshi nationals in Mumbai, was arrested on Saturday and remanded in police custody until December 13 after appearing in court on Sunday.
