Senior BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai stated on Monday that the State government should approach the Supreme Court to present convincing reasons for not releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. This response comes in reaction to the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWMA) directive, instructing Karnataka to continue releasing 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for an additional 15 days. Bommai expressed strong disagreement with the CWMA’s order, deeming it unfeasible. He asserted, “The (release of) water (to Tamil Nadu) should be stopped immediately, and a legal battle should be fought in the Supreme Court to ensure justice for the people.” The CWMA issued this directive following an emergency meeting held on Monday, during which both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu presented their representations. Bommai’s suggestion revolves around the need for Karnataka to contest the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu through a legal process in the Supreme Court, thereby addressing concerns and ensuring fairness.
