NEW DELHI: Holi hosting is a delicate balance. You want a spread that feels festive and indulgent, but you also don’t want to spend the entire morning sweating over hot oil while everyone else plays with colour. The solution? Smart, quick snacks that deliver maximum flavour with minimal effort. From chaats that explode with tangy sweetness to crispy bites that pair perfectly with thandai, these easy recipes will keep your guests fed—and you free to enjoy the celebration.

1. INSTANT DAHI VADA Traditional dahi vadas take planning, soaking and grinding. This shortcut version swaps lentil dumplings for bread discs coated in sooji, giving you the same soft texture in a fraction of the time. It’s tangy, sweet and cooling—perfect after a round of colour play.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 white bread slices

  • 4 tbsp sooji

  • 2 cups thick yoghurt

  • Sugar and salt to taste

  • Tamarind chutney

  • Green chutney

  • Chaat masala

  • Roasted cumin powder

  • Oil for frying

METHOD: Cut bread into circles. Dip briefly in water, squeeze gently and coat with sooji. Fry until golden. Soak in warm water for 10 minutes, squeeze lightly again. Whisk yoghurt with sugar and salt. Arrange vadas, pour yoghurt over, drizzle chutneys and sprinkle spices.

2. AIR FRYER OR BAKED SAMOSAS Samosas are non-negotiable at any festive gathering, but deep frying batches can be exhausting. Using spring roll sheets and an air fryer (or oven) gives you the same crisp shell with far less effort—and less oil splatter.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12 spring roll sheets

  • 3 boiled potatoes (mashed)

  • 1 cup boiled peas

  • 1 tsp grated ginger

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1 tsp cumin powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • ½ tsp garam masala

  • ½ tsp amchur

  • Salt

  • Oil spray

METHOD: Mix filling ingredients. Cut sheets into strips, add filling and fold into triangles. Seal edges with water. Spray lightly with oil and air fry at 180°C for 12-15 minutes or bake at 200°C until golden.

3. PAPDI CHAAT Few things capture the spirit of Holi like a plate of chaat—messy, colourful and bursting with flavour. Papdi chaat is easy to assemble and looks festive layered with yoghurt, chutneys and ruby pomegranate seeds.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Boiled chickpeas

  • Whisked yoghurt (salt & sugar added)

4. ALOO TIKKI Crispy outside, soft inside—aloo tikki is comfort food that never fails. It pairs beautifully with chutney and works as both a standalone snack and a chaat base.
