This year’s Fête de la Musique captivates spectators with a variety of performances by French and Indian performers in a variety of genres. The 12-day music festival features live concerts, fusion, and Indian and French music. It is ongoing in cities including Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Jalandhar, Guwahati, and Ahmedabad. The festival, curated by Boxout.fm, aims to explore the varied musical terrain and foster dialogue between France and India.
A joint initiative of the Embassy of France in India, the French Institute in India and Alliance Française, the festival featured many Indian and French artists.
Started on the 15th June and running until the 26th June, the events will comprise a range of concerts and day-time events, including workshops, and panel discussions in collaboration with the Alliance Française network across various cities. It would also include a musical talent show, interviews with artists, solo/band competitions, local voices—like that of musicians in Telugu States, celebrating World Music Day with the theme ‘amplify India’, and taking a local tour, among others. Artists’ tours across India are also part of the programme.
A relentless raver and owner of Nezha Records, DJ RONI, a Parisian-Malayasian, who gained recognition following her debut at the Paris Boiler Room, will be showcasing a mesmerising fusion of jingle, breaks, techno and club music. India’s pioneering first female emcee MC Kaur, who seeks to make social statements on issues of environment and other conformist aspects of urbanisation, will also be performing. She has many digital albums, including “Hip-Hop Bahu”, to her name, besides participating in various international festivals and several states in India—managing all of it by herself. Mister Colfer, a multi-disciplinary artist (rapper, calligraphy artist, design audio-visual and animation), who has teamed up with MC Kaur would also be participating in the programme. The acclaimed African live band 4AF is also participating.
In addition, Fête de la Musique is promoted on fetedelamusique.in, which acts as a venue for community radio broadcasts, playlists chosen by the community, and a submissions page for the offline events.
The French Minister of Culture, M. Jack Lang, established Fête de la Musique, often known as World Music Day, in 1982. This day, which has been organised annually on June 21st, strives to celebrate music in all its forms with all artists, whether they are amateurs or professionals. A day set aside for making music in various spaces, including concert halls, cafes, and the streets. The major goal is to open music to everyone for free. Many nations and localities have adopted it since it was created 41 years ago.
