Amid preparations to move towards Chandigarh, farmers from various organizations gathered at Amb Sahib Gurudwara in Mohali. Over 3,000 vehicles carrying farmers embarked from different parts of Punjab on Saturday, aiming to reach Chandigarh for a three-day protest starting Sunday. They are poised to rally for the enactment of a law on the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), farmers’ unions have called for a nationwide protest, commemorating the third anniversary of the momentous ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation in 2020.
Stringent security measures are in place to prevent the farmers from entering Chandigarh. Police have diverted routes in Phase XI, which the farmers intended to take to access Chandigarh.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid entering Mohali from the Sector 48 side due to road closures amid the farmers’ protest.
The primary demands of the protesters revolve around securing a law for MSP, ensuring a Rs 10,000 pension for farmers above 60, and eliminating agricultural loans.
BKU (Lakhowal) leader Harinder Singh Lakhowal highlighted the planned meeting on Sunday at 4 pm among protesting farm unions to strategize further actions. He emphasized their commitment to a three-day protest to pressurize both Union and state governments to meet their demands.
