Farmer Leaders to hold talks with Punjab Governor on Tuesday amid ongoing protest. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s three-day protest continued for its second day at the Mohali-Chandigarh border, drawing scores of farmers. Their demands, including a legal assurance of the minimum support price (MSP), prompted farmers to gather and press the Centre for action.
Among their requisites are the withdrawal of cases related to the 2020-21 protests against the now-repealed farm laws, compensation, jobs for family members of deceased farmers from that period, debt waivers, and pension plans.
Harmeet Singh Kadian, a prominent farmer leader, confirmed that representatives would meet the Punjab governor on Tuesday to present their memorandum at 11 am.
The decision on the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s future steps will be discussed and finalized during this meeting. The protest involves various farmer unions, including the Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), BKU (Lakhowal), and BKU (Dakunda), united under the SKM umbrella.
Heavy security measures have been put in place at the protest sites, leading to traffic diversions along some routes. Farmers, arriving from different parts of Punjab, set up camps and a stage while leaders address the assembled crowd.
The gathering, featuring tractor trolleys and vehicles laden with essentials like ration, bedding, and cooking equipment, highlights the determination of the protesters. Both Punjab and Chandigarh Police have heightened security, installing barricades and deploying water cannons near the Mohali-Chandigarh border.
As a result, traffic advisories have been issued by both the Chandigarh and Mohali police, ensuring the safety and management of public movement amid the ongoing demonstrations.
