A 24-year-old factory worker from Bahadurgarh, Haryana, recently underwent a successful hand reimplantation surgery at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in New Delhi. The worker’s right hand had been completely severed by a laser woodcutting machine, and he was rushed to the hospital on September 28. A skilled team of plastic and orthopaedic surgeons worked for nine hours to reattach the hand, according to hospital authorities.

The patient, after losing his hand, picked it up himself and sought immediate medical attention. Initially treated at a local hospital, he was referred to Dr. RML Hospital in New Delhi, where he was promptly transferred to the Department of Plastic Surgery. A dedicated team, led by Prof. Dr. Mukesh Sharma, began the operation as soon as he arrived.

The success of the surgery was credited to the coordinated efforts of OT nursing and paramedical staff, along with the hospital’s blood bank and laboratory services. After the procedure, the patient was monitored in intensive care for three days and is now in stable condition.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Sameek Bhattacharya, Director Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery at RML Hospital, emphasized the crucial role of quick action in such cases. “If the amputated part is brought to the hospital within six hours, there is a significantly higher chance of successful replantation,” Dr. Bhattacharya explained. He further advised that the severed hand should be cleaned with water or sterile saline, wrapped in moistened gauze, placed in an airtight bag, and stored in an icebox.

The complex procedure was carried out by Dr. Sharma’s team, including senior residents Dr. Sonika, Dr. Sukriti, Dr. Dhawal, Dr. Bully, Dr. Vignesh, and orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Manjesh and Dr. Subham. The anaesthesia team, led by Prof. Dr. Namita Arora and assisted by Dr. Shubhi, Dr. Ashutosh, and Dr. Sonal, played a critical role in the surgery, which involved advanced microvascular techniques. Over the nine-hour operation, surgeons painstakingly fixed the bones and tendons, and reconnected arteries, veins, and nerves using a microscope.

RML Hospital, recognized for its state-of-the-art facilities, has a highly trained surgical team available 24/7 for emergencies. The hospital’s anaesthesia department, led by Dr. Neerja Banerjee, also provides continuous support for critical surgeries.

Prof. Dr. Ajay Shukla, Director and Medical Superintendent of RML Hospital, commended the team for their dedication and highlighted the hospital’s commitment to providing high-end surgeries free of cost, ensuring accessible healthcare for all.
