Afghanistan’s recent qualification for the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup marks a significant achievement in their cricketing journey, and much of their success is owed to the crucial support provided by India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Here are the key ways in which India’s ‘hidden role’ has helped Afghanistan rise in world cricket:

1. Home Ground in India: The Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida became Afghanistan’s temporary “home ground” in 2015, courtesy of the BCCI. This shift from Sharjah to Noida allowed Afghanistan to play international matches against teams like Ireland. They also hosted a Twenty20 series against Bangladesh in Dehradun.

2. Indian Coaches’ Guidance: The BCCI provided Afghanistan with the platform to excel by offering facilities and the expertise of former Indian players. Coaches like Lalchand Rajput, Manoj Prabhakar, and Ajay Jadeja have played significant roles in mentoring the Afghan team. Jadeja served as their mentor as recently as the ODI World Cup 2023.

3. Strengthening Relations: The BCCI’s efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations included inviting Afghanistan’s then-president Ashraf Ghani to watch the team play its first Test match in Bengaluru. This step was crucial in fostering goodwill and cooperation between the cricket boards and the nations.

4. The Incredible Role of IPL: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been instrumental in the success of Afghan players. Participation in the IPL has provided Afghan cricketers with significant earnings and exposure, helping them improve their skills and inspiring others in their country. The number of Afghan players in the IPL has steadily increased, contributing to the team’s overall development and success.

This collaborative effort between India and Afghanistan has been pivotal in elevating Afghan cricket, allowing them to achieve unprecedented success on the world stage.
