Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked world leaders not to believe Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertion that he is ready to bring the war to a conclusion, urging the need for unity between Ukraine, the European Union, and the United States prior to initiating negotiations.
Zelenskyy issued the warning following a string of high-level diplomatic events, such as a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Putin to begin peace negotiations. Zelenskyy spoke about the issue after having a discussion with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, during which both leaders laid out the conditions necessary for lasting peace in Ukraine.
“Let’s only move forward from here if all three of us are on one position Ukraine, Europe, and the United States,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post. He also emphasized that Ukraine should bargain with strength, strong security assurances, and confirmed once again that becoming a NATO member is still the most economic-friendly solution for allies of Ukraine. He further underlined investing in the defense sector of Ukraine as another imperative security solution.
Zelenskyy also informed Tusk about his recent telephone conversation with Trump, emphasizing the need for European positions to be coordinated in order to achieve successful results for the whole continent. He emphasized that joint action would make Ukraine’s negotiating position stronger and support international security.
His most scathing comments, however, were reserved for Putin’s recent overtures, warning world leaders not to take them at face value. “I warned world leaders not to believe Putin’s words about being prepared to end the war,” he said, reinforcing doubts about Russia’s real intentions.
While diplomatic negotiations proceed, Zelenskyy insists that the peace deal be founded on confidence, solidarity, and a solid defense plan for lasting stability of Ukraine and her allies.
