Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed doubt about Russia’s commitment to a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, despite Kyiv accepting the truce plan. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday, Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine does not trust Moscow’s intentions.
“I have emphasized this many times none of us trust the Russians,” he said.
Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire plan during talks in Saudi Arabia, prompting President Donald Trump’s administration to lift its freeze on military aid. The White House also suggested the move could mark the beginning of the end of the conflict. However, Zelenskyy stressed that the next steps depended entirely on Russia’s response.
“Everything depends on whether Russia wants a ceasefire and silence or if it wants to continue killing people,” he said. “Ukraine has demonstrated its position, and today, Russia must respond.”
Stronger Actions Against Russia Expected
Zelenskyy also called for firm measures from the US should Russia reject the ceasefire proposal.
“I understand we can count on strong steps. I don’t know the details yet, but we are talking about sanctions and strengthening Ukraine,” he noted.
The proposed ceasefire would include a halt to hostilities on land, sea, and air. Zelenskyy said the pause would give Ukraine time to evaluate its next moves, including potential security guarantees from its Western allies.
Russia’s Response Still Unclear
Moscow has yet to confirm whether it finds the US-Ukraine ceasefire agreement acceptable. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia expects further briefings from US officials before making a decision.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz are set to update Moscow on the outcome of the talks in the coming days, Peskov told reporters.
