The country has taken delivery of the first batch of French Mirage 2000 fighter jets and US-made F-16 fighters from the Netherlands. The move has further strengthened its air force, amid ongoing conflict with Russia. This is the first milestone since Ukraine continued its efforts to modernize its military against Russian aggression.

Since the invasion of Russia three years ago, Ukraine has heavily relied on an old air force. The biggest portion is made up of Soviet aircraft. Considering the growing threat from the air superiority of Russia and their long-range strikes on Ukrainian positions, Kyiv has approached its Western allies for more modern military equipment – tanks, missiles, armoured vehicles, and newer fighter jets.

The Mirage 2000s and F-16s form part of that growing support. French and Dutch authorities have refused to comment on the exact number of jets that were delivered, under the guise of security. The Netherlands has pledged to send 24 F-16 fighters. France has also committed to supply several Mirage 2000s, and is expected to provide six from its Air Force. This has the capability of being used to carry out either aerial dogfighting or even air-to-ground strikes, therefore enhancing the strength of the military in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked France and the Netherlands for their persistent support, noting that the new aircraft would make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s air defense. Defence Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that the new aircraft would soon start combat operations and play a key role in bolstering the country’s defenses.

Apart from the supply of the aircraft, Ukrainian pilots are also being prepared in Romania to handle the new machines. Following the schedule for France is a conclave on 12 February between top leaders of Europe and the US for further planning with Kyiv.
