Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is in stable but serious condition after being shot at close range during an assassination attempt in Handlova, according to CNN. The incident occurred following an off-site government meeting and has drawn reactions from global leaders.

The prime minister underwent surgery after the attack, which took place as he approached a small group of people. A possible shooter in the crowd opened fire on Fico five times from behind a security screen.

Hospital officials reported that Robert Fico was stabilized but remained in a serious condition after spending over five hours in surgery. The prime minister is currently in the intensive care unit for further treatment.

Slovak Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak provided an update on Fico’s condition, stating that steps are being taken to improve his health but acknowledging the severity of the situation.

The suspected gunman has been detained by police, and Slovak President Zuzana Caputova condemned the attack as a threat to democracy, emphasizing its impact on the nation’s democratic principles.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Slovakia, highlighting the deep political divisions surrounding Fico’s leadership, with supporters viewing him positively and critics raising concerns about his policies and affiliations.
