Over 380 families affected by heavy rains, floods in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that heavy rains and floods have led to the deaths of seven individuals and affected nearly 400 families in Afghanistan, according to TOLO News. OCHA’s report also indicates that approximately 1500 acres of agricultural land have been destroyed, with the provinces of Faryab, Nangarhar, and Daikundi experiencing the most significant damage.

“This is the third instance of flooding in the northern region within a month, resulting in seven fatalities and affecting 384 families due to heavy rains on March 21 and 26-27,” the report highlighted, as per TOLO News. Mirwais Hajizada, deputy head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, emphasized the need for collaboration among affected provinces to implement projects for farmers impacted by the floods.

In Faryab province, many affected individuals have requested additional assistance from the Taliban and relief organizations, citing significant damage to their agricultural lands. Ziauddin, an affected resident, lamented, “The flood came just a few days ago, destroying our agricultural lands.”

The Ministry of Disaster Management reported that over the past month, more than 1,600 homes have been destroyed, and over 177,900 livestock have perished due to snow and rain. This marks the third occurrence of floods in Afghanistan’s northern region within a month, according to Khaama Press.

Furthermore, government authorities have disclosed that over the past year, 1,129 individuals have lost their lives, and 941 others have sustained injuries due to natural disasters in the country.
