Since Donald Trump took office as US President on January 20, nearly 11,000 migrants have been deported from the United States to Mexico, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who announced this figure on Friday. Of them, around 2,500 were non-Mexican nationals.
The announcement comes just days after Sheinbaum had agreed with Trump to put aside planned tariffs on Mexican goods. In exchange, Mexico had committed to deploying thousands of National Guard officers along its northern border in order to halt the flow of migrants toward the US.
During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum also acknowledged that Mexico repatriates to Honduras through flight and ground transfer the deported migrants. However, she stressed the fact that this return is made on a willing basis.
“It’s voluntary,” she said. “We will accompany them so they can return to their home countries.”
The agreement with the US shows Mexico is working to correct migration problems while steering clear of economic shocks from potential American trade measures.
