France is facing a growing problem of massive illegal importation and sale of adulterated “love honey,” laced with potentially dangerous doses of erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra and Cialis. Customs officials are sounding the alarm as seizures of these products soar, posing serious health risks to consumers.

Record Seizures Highlight Growing Problem

The data of customs indicate that the seizing of adulterated honey was significantly increased and, in fact, reached to 131 cases reported in 2023, from merely 18 in 2019. It is the case when Marseille authorities caught more than 13 tonnes of aphrodisiac honey from Malaysia in November 2023.

The honey, often marketed as an all-natural sexual enhancer, contains active pharmaceutical ingredients such as Sildenafil and Tadalafil. These compounds, commonly found in prescription drugs like Viagra and Cialis, are strictly regulated in France. According to French customs, laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of these substances in confiscated samples.

Dangerous Health Risks for Consumers

Health experts warn that consuming this adulterated honey can lead to severe health complications. Without clear dosage information or warnings about contraindications, users risk fatal consequences when combining these products with other medications.

“There is a real danger of serious or fatal incidents, especially with overdoses,” said Dr. Alain Ducardonnet, a cardiologist, during an interview with BFMTV. “Excessive consumption can lead to epileptic seizures, internal bleeding, or kidney failure.”

In 2021, French health authorities linked adulterated honey to several cases of convulsions, cerebral edema, and acute kidney injuries. Despite these warnings, the product remains popular among young men seeking to emulate performances seen on adult websites.

Thriving Black Market of Love Honey

Vendors promote this honey aggressively on social media, offering delivery services across France. Prices range from ₹2,700 per jar to ₹4,500 for 10 sachets. The product is often sold in unregulated stores that also deal in illicit cigarettes and drugs, evading France’s strict import regulations.

Illegal shipments primarily originate from Malaysia, Turkey, and Tunisia, arriving via container ships or smaller online orders. While France imports legal honey from countries like Ukraine, Belgium, and Spain, these illicit products bypass safety checks.

Officials Issue Public Warning

French customs officials and health authorities are urging the public to avoid these products, emphasizing the risks involved. “This is not just about illegal trade; it’s about safeguarding public health,” officials said in a statement.

The trend underscores the need for stricter monitoring of online sales and international imports. Authorities continue to investigate and dismantle networks involved in distributing these dangerous products.
