Indian American Bhavini Patel loses election of Pennsylvania Congressional

Democratic candidate Bhavini Patel lost the primary congressional race in Pennsylvania albeit by a thin margin on Tuesday. The incumbent Summer Lee emerged victorious. Securing 59 per cent votes in comparison to the 41 per cent votes received by Patel.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette opined that looking at the results, candidates like Miss Lee still entertain the hold over the district of Pittsburgh. Despite Patel supporter’s claim that the views and alignment of the congress squad doesn’t reflect the politics of the area. “Her (Patel’s) loss Tuesday shows that a progressive candidate like Ms. Lee can still carry districts like Pittsburgh, despite Ms. Patel and her supporters claiming that the incumbent’s progressive views and alignment with the ‘Squad’ in Congress did not accurately reflect the politics of the area,”

What’s a Squad?

The Squad is a form of an informal group, which consists of progressive members of the Congress. Who are notably associated with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayana Pressley.

Differences between the Candidates

Bhavini Patel is the supporter of Joe Biden. While first-time lawmaker summer lee has been known for its open criticism against the current President. She’s also a Palestine supporter in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

She belongs to Gujarat, state of India. As revealed by the Pennsylvania candidate in one interview, her mother came to United States of America when she was small.

She further said “She came to this country with very little, which I think is a story that resonates with many people in the Indian diaspora here in this country. When she came here, she raised my brother and I as a single parent. We moved around quite a bit, to various different cities, and she worked various odd jobs, washing dishes in the restaurant industry, working in the motel industry.”
