The Ohio Police have unveiled body camera footage depicting a Black man who died after repeatedly uttering “I can’t breathe” while being restrained by officers during his arrest, as per WKYC, a local Cleveland news outlet. The video, released by the Canton Police Department, portrays the demise of Frank E. Tyson, a 53-year-old resident of East Canton. It shows officers confronting Tyson and attempting to apprehend him, with one officer eventually restraining him by placing a knee on his upper body. Tyson’s pleas of “I can’t breathe” are heard throughout the encounter.

Subsequently, the footage depicts Tyson lying motionless for over five minutes before officers check for a pulse. The incident unfolded on April 18 when officers responded to a crash at an AMVETS post in Canton Township. Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch from the traffic bureau, identified as involved, have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducts an inquiry.

Authorities initially acknowledged the incident on Friday, stating that Tyson became unresponsive shortly after being handcuffed and that despite CPR and Narcan administration, he was pronounced dead at a hospital. Following the video’s release, Canton Mayor William Sherer II issued a statement, expressing condolences to Tyson’s family and affirming commitment to transparency throughout the investigation.
