At least 28 people, including children, were injured in Munich on Thursday after a driver rammed into a group of pedestrians, German police confirmed.
The incident took place at 10:30 a.m. in the southern German city, and authorities believe the suspect to be a 14-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker.
The driver has been taken into custody, and Bavarian governor Markus Söder stated, “it is suspected to be an attack.”
The crash happened just a day before high-profile politicians from around the world gather in Munich for the prestigious Munich Security Conference, which is set to take place approximately 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from the site of the incident, according to local media outlet DW.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to arrive on February 13.
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his distress over the event, saying he was “deeply shocked” by what had occurred.
At the time of the crash, a demonstration organized by the service workers’ union was also taking place nearby.
