A Swiss International Air Lines cabin crew member tragically passed away after the plane made an emergency landing due to smoke filling the cockpit and cabin. The Airbus A220-300 was en route from Bucharest to Zurich on December 23 when engine issues led to smoke in the aircraft. The plane was diverted and landed safely in Graz, Austria. The incident involved 74 passengers and five crew members.

Cabin Crew Member Dies in Hospital

Swiss Airlines confirmed the heartbreaking news on Monday, reporting that one of the crew members died in the hospital in Graz. The airline expressed its deep sorrow, with CEO Jens Fehlinger stating that the loss had left the entire organisation in a state of shock and grief. Fehlinger offered his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, saying, “Our thoughts are with his family, whose pain we cannot imagine.”

Following the emergency landing, one cabin crew member was immediately airlifted to the hospital by helicopter and admitted to intensive care. Another crew member also received medical treatment. Twelve passengers were taken to the hospital, though Swiss Airlines reported on Tuesday that all hospitalised passengers had since been discharged.

Investigation Underway

Swiss Airlines COO Oliver Buchhofer expressed his distress over the loss, calling it the “saddest of days” for the airline. He thanked the local emergency services in Graz for their support during the incident. Swiss has confirmed that an investigation is underway, with a focus on the mechanical components of the aircraft, such as the engine, as well as the cabin crew’s use of protective breathing equipment during the emergency.

Cause of Death and Details Remain Confidential

Out of respect for the family’s privacy, Swiss Airlines has not disclosed detailed information about the deceased crew member or the exact cause of death. The airline emphasised that the investigation will continue in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
