Three popular Indian dishes—samosa, pani puri, and Khoya are frequently served at the White House. While samosas have enjoyed a longstanding presence, pani puri and another dish known as khoya have recently joined the extensive reception offerings.
In Washington, pani puri, also known as golgappa or puchka, has become a recurring feature at White House receptions, delighting guests with its irresistible flavors. Over the past year, it has been served on multiple occasions, including at the Rose Garden reception hosted by President Joe Biden to commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Notably, pani puris have become a staple at top events and receptions, diversifying the White House’s culinary offerings beyond samosas. Attendees, such as community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria, have expressed their delight at the addition of pani puris to the menu, praising their authentic taste and spice level.
During the recent reception, guests were also treated to another Indian delicacy called khoya, a sweet made from khoya. This inclusion reflects the White House’s commitment to showcasing the diverse culinary heritage of Asian American communities, including Indian Americans.
The growing popularity of golgappa in the US can be attributed to its delectable taste and increasing exposure among US officials who have visited India. This highlights the significance of a beloved Indian street food.
