Deadly Heat In Mexico Causes Howler Monkeys To Fall Dead From Trees

The scorching heatwave in Mexico has led to a tragic phenomenon where howler monkeys are perishing in significant numbers, with at least 138 of these midsize primates found dead in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco since May 16. The Biodiversity Conservation of The Usumacinta group reported this distressing situation. While some were fortunate enough to be rescued by locals, including five who received urgent medical attention from a veterinarian, many others succumbed to the extreme heat.

Dr. Sergio Valenzuela, who treated the rescued monkeys, described their condition as critical, suffering from dehydration and fever indicative of heatstroke. This unfortunate event comes amidst Mexico’s intense heatwave, which has already claimed the lives of 26 people since March. The temperatures in some areas soared to a scorching 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) on a recent Tuesday, affecting a third of the country.

The incident began unfolding in Tecolutilla, Tabasco, where dead monkeys were first noticed on Friday. Wildlife biologist Gilberto Pozo, who witnessed the distressing scene, recounted the monkeys falling from trees due to severe dehydration, often resulting in fatal injuries. Pozo attributed these deaths to a combination of factors, including high temperatures, drought, forest fires, and deforestation, which deprives the monkeys of essential resources like water, shade, and food.

For the local community in Tabasco, howler monkeys hold significant cultural and environmental value, with their distinctive roars serving as natural timekeepers. Despite efforts by residents to assist the monkeys, experts caution that interventions must be carefully managed to avoid inadvertently harming the animals, especially the vulnerable young ones.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the Mexican government, led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has pledged support for conservation efforts. However, challenges persist as the country grapples with widespread heat-related issues, including record-breaking temperatures, water shortages, and increased demand for essential supplies like ice.

This heartbreaking incident with the howler monkeys serves as a stark reminder of the broader impacts of climate change on vulnerable species and ecosystems. As experts continue their efforts to understand and mitigate these effects, it underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address the growing climate crisis.
