The Indian government informed Parliament on Thursday that 18 Indian nationals remain in the Russian armed forces. Of them, 16 have been reported missing by Russian authorities.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh shared this information in a written response in the Rajya Sabha. He also provided a state-wise domicile breakdown of the 18 Indians:

  • Uttar Pradesh – 9
  • Punjab – 2
  • Haryana – 2
  • Chandigarh – 1
  • Maharashtra – 1
  • Kerala – 1
  • Bihar – 1
  • Jammu & Kashmir – 1

12 Indians Confirmed Dead in Ongoing Conflict

In response to another query, Singh confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have lost their lives while serving in the Russian armed forces during the ongoing conflict.

“Our Missions and Posts prioritize the safety and well-being of all Indian nationals abroad and take necessary actions whenever assistance is required,” he assured.

Efforts to Ensure Their Safe Return

The Indian government has taken several steps to ensure the safety of its citizens in Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Moscow have:

  • Engaged with Russian authorities for updates on missing individuals.
  • Requested Russia to ensure the safety and early discharge of the remaining Indians.
  • Assisted Indian nationals in returning to India by facilitating travel documents and providing air tickets when necessary.

Past Repatriation Efforts

The Indian government had earlier helped 97 Indians return home after their service in the Russian armed forces was discontinued. The MEA continues to push for the release of those still serving.
