16 Indians Missing, 12 Dead in Russian Army, Confirms MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs gave an update on Friday regarding the Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army during the war with Ukraine. According to MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the whereabouts of 16 individuals remain unknown. The Russian Government has classified them as “missing.”

16 Indian Nationals Missing, 12 Confirmed Dead

As of January 17, the MEA verified that 126 Indian nationals were reported to be serving in the Russian military. Of them, 96 Indian nationals have returned to India, and their discharges from the Russian Armed Forces are already confirmed. However, there are 18 Indians still on duty, with 16 Indians yet to be contacted. Sadly, 12 Indians have lost their lives while in the Russian Army.

“We are working very actively on getting them released and brought back home, especially those whose whereabouts are not known,” Jaiswal said during a media briefing.

Death of Binil TB and Other Injuries Update

The MEA’s update comes after the reported death of Binil TB, a man from Kerala who had been serving in the Russian Army. Binil, originally from Thrissur, died while fighting for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. The tragic news was made public by his relative earlier this week. Additionally, another Indian national from Kerala sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment in Moscow.

“The death of Binil Babu is highly unfortunate. We have condoled the death to his family. Our embassy is coordinating with the Russian authorities to make sure that the mortal remains are brought back to India immediately. The injured one is undergoing treatment in Moscow. We hope he comes back soon.

India Pushes for Early Discharge of Indian Nationals in Russian Army

India has called on Russia to release all Indian nationals recruited into the Russian military. Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue during his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July of the previous year. The Indian government has continued pressing the Russian authorities to hasten the discharge of these nationals.
