Bollywood’s veteran screenwriter Salim Khan had claimed that despite being Muslims, his family has never eaten beef. He clarified that their values, customs, and respect for India’s diverse culture play a big role in their decision.

Although beef is inexpensive and frequently consumed in Muslim homes, the Khan family abstains from eating it in accordance with the teachings of Prophet Mohammed. In keeping with their secular and inclusive lifestyle, they also observe Hindu holidays.

Why the Khans Avoid Beef?

Salim Khan said, “From Indore until today, we have never had beef. Beef is eaten by most Muslims as it is the cheapest meat. Some even buy it to feed pet dogs.”

He also explained, “But in the teachings of Prophet Mohammed, he has clearly stated that a cow’s milk is a substitute for mother’s milk and it is a mufid (beneficial) cheezy (thing). He has stated that cows should not be killed and beef is forbidden.”

Learning From All Religions

Salim Khan believes that different religions have something good to teach. He said, “Prophet Mohammed has adopted good things from every religion. Like eating only halaal meat, which was adopted from the Jews, who call it kosher. He has postulated that every religion is good and believes in a Supreme Power like we do.”

His words send a clear message: religion should not create walls but build respect among communities.

Celebrating Hindu Festivals Together

The Khan family participates in Hindu festivals as well, they joyfully celebrate Diwali and have welcomed Ganpati into their home. For them, these celebrations are about expressing love and solidarity rather than merely following customs. Their festivities serve as a reminder of the respectful coexistence that characterizes Indian culture.
