One of the most enduring voices the fashion world has ever known has fallen silent. Paul Costelloe is a celebrated Irish designer whose work shaped decades of style in Britain and Ireland, died in London aged 80 after a short illness. His death closes a chapter in modern fashion, marking the end of a career defined by craftsmanship, discipline and a deep connection to his cultural roots.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe grew up surrounded by the garment trade through his father's raincoat business. His early interest in design led him to the Grafton Academy, followed by advanced training at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. Those formative years laid the foundation for a global career across Milan, New York and London.
Costelloe is survived by his wife, Anne Cooper, who stood by his side through his personal and professional journey. Their marriage was the quiet anchor behind his relentless work ethic and his long presence on the international fashion stage.
He is survived by seven children William, Jessica, Nicholas, Paul-Emmet, Robert, Gavin and Justin. They were all with him at the end, which says much about his close-knit family life.
In 1979 he launched his label, which quickly gained a reputation for refined tailoring combined with his use of traditional Irish linen and tweeds. He became a mainstay of London Fashion Week for four decades, showing collections that combined classical silhouettes with ease. His work also expanded into menswear, accessories, homeware and corporate uniform design.
Costelloe's career reached new heights in 1983 when he became the personal designer to Diana, Princess of Wales. Their collaboration lasted up to her death and helped seal his place among the most influential designers of the era. His pieces for the Princess remain some of the most recognisable of her wardrobe.
He collaborated with major retailers throughout his career, but most significantly with Dunnes Stores in Ireland, where his designs reached a wider audience. He also earned a place on a commemorative Irish stamp set in 2010, celebrating his contribution to national fashion.
Company filings in 2024 valued Paul Costelloe & Sons Ltd. at about £368,377, placing his net worth at approximately Rs. 3.9 crore.
His family confirmed he died peacefully in London after a short illness, surrounded by his closest family members.
