First meeting with partner’s parents can shape lasting relationships, actor Vivek Dahiya recently reflected on this in his heartfelt YouTube vlog. Recalling the first time he met his father-in-law, Narendra Tripathi, just before proposing to wife Divyanka Tripathi, Vivek described how a simple evening turned into a memory he cherishes deeply.

From nerves to tears, he captured the essence of genuine emotional connection experts say such meetings, though often nerve-racking, offer the perfect opportunity to build lifelong trust and intimacy with your partner’s family.

A Nervous Start with a Warm Ending

Vivek first met his father-in-law in Bengaluru on December 14, 2015, right before he planned to propose to Divyanka the meeting was a formal family discussion about the couple’s future. “He spoke very little but straight to the point,” Vivek recalled. Narendra Tripathi gently reminded him that Divyanka was already a star and differences would arise—but they shouldn’t be taken to heart.

Vivek added, “He was an uncle for a night, then became papa for me.” He also admitted that his future father-in-law had no clue he was about to propose that same night.

A Strict Exterior, a Soft Heart

After the proposal, Vivek saw a side of his father-in-law that surprised him, “he cried like a baby,” Vivek said. Though he appeared strict, his emotional reaction revealed a softer core. Vivek recognised himself in those tears, saying, “He is just like me.”

He also praised Mr. Tripathi’s ability to understand people without interrogating them. “If Divyanka sees her father’s qualities in me, then I’m truly grateful,” he shared.

What Experts Say About Meeting the Parents

Psychotherapist and coach Dr. Chandni Tugnait calls first meetings with a partner’s parents a great opportunity for authentic bonding. “Be your true self while showing that you genuinely care about your partner and their family,” she advised.

Nerves are natural. “You feel like you’re auditioning without a script. Every word or gesture feels magnified,” Dr. Tugnait explained.

Shared Moments Break the Ice

The key to breaking tension lies in shared stories and laughter. “Talk about common interests or funny stories from your partner’s life,” suggested Dr. Tugnait. These moments help turn anxiety into real connection.

Whether you’re a celebrity or not, first meetings can feel overwhelming. But as Vivek Dahiya’s story shows, staying open, genuine, and respectful can lead to bonds that last a lifetime.
