Industrialist Sunjay Kapur, former Chairman of Sona Comstar, passed away in London on June 12 while playing polo. The UK authorities have now confirmed that his death was due to natural causes — specifically left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemic heart disease, according to the coroner’s report released by his wife Priya Sachdev Kapur’s office.
However, even as the medical findings settle the official cause of death, but the case has sparked controversy within the family. Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has raised allegations of foul play and is pressing for a full investigation and the tensions have escalated into a larger power struggle over the future of the Sona Group and its legacy.
Coroner Confirms Natural Causes
The coroner’s report, officially communicated through Priya Sachdev Kapur’s office, puts to rest widespread speculation about the cause of death and it states that Sunjay died of pre-existing heart conditions. Despite this, his mother Rani has formally approached UK authorities, questioning the circumstances around her son’s sudden death.

Allegations from Rani Kapur
In a letter dated July 24 addressed to the board of Sona Comstar, Rani Kapur called her son’s death “highly suspicious and unexplained.” She accused certain individuals of using the family tragedy as an opportunity to seize control of the company.
She also objected to the company’s recent decisions, including the appointment of Priya Sachdev Kapur as a non-executive director, Rani had requested a postponement of the AGM that confirmed Priya’s appointment, citing unresolved questions around Sunjay’s passing and corporate governance concerns.
Company Pushes Forward Amid Disputes
Despite the internal rift, the company has moved forward. On June 23, just eleven days after Sunjay’s death, Jeffery Mark Overly was unanimously appointed as Chairman of the Board. The shareholders also approved Priya Kapur’s appointment in the AGM held on July 25.
Rani Kapur claims she is the majority shareholder based on her late husband Surinder Kapur’s 2015 will, which she says made her the sole beneficiary of the estate and however, in an official regulatory filing, Sona Comstar clarified that Rani has not held any shares in the company since at least 2019, as per company records.
This clash over the company’s control and Sunjay Kapur’s legacy comes at a sensitive time. While the cause of death may be medically resolved, the legal and familial battles appear far from over.
